Measure for Measure
Shakespeare's provocative play to be performed
at SUNY New Paltz

Measure for Measure, one of Shakespeare’s more daring and inventive plays, and certainly one of his more challenging for actors, directors and designers will be performed November 13th – 23 rd in Parker Theatre on the campus of the State University of New York at New Paltz. The play is directed by Paul Kassel, associate professor of Theatre Arts.

Measure for Measure is a provocative and darkly comic investigation into the themes of justice, mercy, and forgiveness. Upon his departure from Vienna, Duke Vincentio decides to leave the city government in the hands of his deputy Angelo. Angelo resolves to revive harsh laws against sexual freedom which have long ago fallen into disuse. Under these laws a young gentleman, Claudio, is sentenced to death for having made his fiancée Juliet pregnant before their wedding ceremony. Angelo meets with Claudio’s sister Isabella, a novice nun, who pleads for mercy on behalf of Claudio. Overcome with lust, Angelo promises Isabella that he will free Claudio if she will sleep with him.
